Her father was born in June so she chose to hold the first fathers day on June 19th of 1910. Juneteenth - also known as Emancipation Day, is the oldest known holiday celebrating the end of slavery.  It started on June 19, 1865 when the Union soldiers, led by General Granger, came to Galveston Texas and announced that the Civil War was over and the slaves were free.  General Granger read the Emancipation Proclamation, freeing approximately 250,000 slaves in the state of Texas.  Texas and Oklahoma are the only two states in the United States that have made Juneteenth a legal holiday.  For more information, please visit www.juneteenth.com
