The Mission of the Sag Harbor Historical Society (SHHS) is to promote and encourage public education and appreciation of Sag Harbor history; and to work for the preservation of historic buildings and sites; and to foster the preservation of the historic character of the village.  The Sag Harbor Historical Society was established in 1985 and incorporated in 1989.  The Society's headquarters are located in the Annie Cooper Boyd House on Main Street in Sag Harbor.  The house dates back to the 18th century and was thought to be the house in which David Frothingham first published the Long Island Herald, Long Island's first newspaper, in the 1790's.  Today, research has proven this untrue, and it is likely that Frothingham ran his business from a building located across the street from the Annie Cooper Boyd House.  The house is currently undergoing restoration and donations are welcome.  The Sag Harbor Historical Society offers a number of programs to the public, including:

Quarterly Meetings that are open to the public.
Special Guest Lectures and Slide Shows.
Visits to Historic Properties in the village that have been fully restored.
Walking Tours of historic Sag Harbor
     and much, much, more . . .

As part of it's mission to represent the history of Sag Harbor to the public, the Society holds over 500 books, letters, documents, diaries, postcards, bibles, and ledgers that record the history of the village; a photograph collection that includes images of local residents, buildings, and sites within and surrounding the village; and an extensive collection of artwork done by Annie Cooper Boyd, the former owner of the Society's headquarters, of local sites and scenes.  The majority of the collection is stored at the Society's headquarters, and may be viewed by appointment.  Reference questions relating to the history of the village can be answered by the staff as well.
